Miltoniopsis phalaenopsis: The Species Behind Today's Pansy Orchid Hybrids

WHILE CARING FOR MY COLLECTION of species orchids through the years, I have come to think of certain ones almost as pets or family members. Whether it is their wonderful fragrance, their long-lasting, colorful and abundant blooms, the perfect size orjust sheer cuteness, they have that certain je ne sais quoi. One of my favorites is Miltoniopsis phalaenopsis, a compact-growing species from the humid forests of Colombia.This plant is 10-14 inches (25-36 cm) tall, making it almost a miniature, with less need for valuable bench space. The pale green pseudo-bulbs have a flattened egg shape, and each bears a single narrow, light blue-green leaf at the apex and distichous leaflike bracts at the base. Each growth can produce up to two flower spikes, with each bearing three to five blooms. Its crystalline white sepals and petals open flat and have a diamond dust texture.
