Key decisions question the viability of resource management legislation

Two declined resource management decisions this year - both turning down applications for economic development - highlight the legislative complications facing developers.In April our Supreme Court rejected an application by King Salmon to establish a salmon farm at Papatua in a remote and sparsely populated part of the Marlborough Sounds. The rejection was due to the proposed area for the salmon farm being an outstanding natural landscape. King Salmon's application was opposed by environmental groups and the appeal was taken to the Supreme Court by the Environmental Protection Society.
