A Study of Frequency Characteristics of a HeNe Laser in an Axial Magnetic Field

The beat frequencies of orthogonally polarized radiation modes are studied as functions of the oscillation frequency in a He–Ne laser with an isotropic resonator in an homogeneous and local magnetic field. In the homogeneous magnetic field, the experimental curves qualitatively agree with those calculated. The dependences obtained for the local magnetic field strongly vary when a source of the magnetic field is shifted along the laser axis and may substantially differ from similar curves for the homogeneous field. The data obtained show the advantages of the local magnetic field over the homogeneous field for the development of a frequency-stabilized two-wave Zeeman laser for interferometry.
