Sulcus fixation of a 3-piece diffractive multifocal intraocular lens with and without optic capture in the anterior capsulorhexis

Complications during cataract surgery, for example, posterior capsule tear, may prevent intraocular lens (IOL) fixation in the capsular bag. However, the IOL may still be placed in the ciliary sulcus if there was sufficient anterior capsular support.In this study, we present a retrospective case series of clinical outcomes after primary implantation of a 3-piece diffractive multi-focal IOL, the ZMAOO (Abbott Medical Optics Inc., Santa Ana, CA), in the sulcus with or without optic capture in the anterior capsulo-rhexis during complicated cataract surgeries. This IOL achieves excellent visual acuity (VA) in patients after refractive lens exchange. Ethics committee approval was obtained for this study. All surgeries were performed by one surgeon (J.S.M.C.) between July 2009 and November 2012.
