INCREASE OF SPONTANEOUS QUADRUPOLE TRANSITION RATE IN THE VICINITY OF A DIELECTRIC MICROSPHERE

It is shown that the spontaneous quadrupole transition probability in the vicinity of a microsphere may increase by several orders of magnitude and become commensurate with the dipole transition probability, provided the radius of curvature of the sphere is much smaller than the radiation wavelength.
