Influence of the thickness and composition of the solid-state dye laser media on the laser properties

In this work, pyrromethene 567, perylene orange and perylene red doped in MTES- and VTES-derived organically modified silicates (ORMOSILs) monolith with various sample thickness, up to 16 mm, were prepared. Their laser performances including slope efficiency, threshold and longevity were studied. The results illustrated that progress could be made on the longevity of solid-state dye laser by increasing the thickness of the monolith. Under the pump intensity of 0.1 J/cm(2) at the repetition rate of 2 Hz, the output energy of perylene orange doped in VTES-derived ORMOSIL monolith decreased to 50% of its initial value after 78 000 pulses. Under the same experimental conditions, the pyrromethene 567 doped in MTES-derived ORMOSIL monolith shot 106 000 pulses with an output reduction of less than 15%.
