Efficiency and noise performance of four-wave mixing (FWM) between short optical pulses in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) are analyzed, taking into account the effects of fast gain saturation. A simple theoretical model is presented to evaluate the efficiency and noise properties of the FWM between short optical pulses. Optimum conditions for maximum conversion efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of output FWM signal are also investigated.
