We study the optical properties of a layered medium consisting of a cubic nonlinear layer near a phase conjugate mirror. We address the distortion correction properties of the phase conjugate mirror in the context of the nonlinear medium and by explicit calculations demonstrate the validity of the general theorem of Agarwal [Optics Comm. 47 (1983) 77] dealing with the feasibility of complete distortion correction for a broad class of nonlinear media under specific conditions. We also study the range of angles of incidence where guided modes can be excited. We show optical multistability with both the guided and enhanced back scattering resonances.
