摘要

Graft-copolymerization of bleached jute fiber with acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile was studied in an aqueous medium,with potassium persulphate as an initiator,under the catalytic influence of FeSO4,in air.To attain the maximum grafting level,the optimum monomer,initiator,catalyst concentrations,as well as time and temperature,were determined.The optimised percent graft yields of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile were of 22.2% and 24.8%,respectively.A higher graft yield of methacrylonitrile,versus that of acrylonitrile,might be due to the(-CH3)substituent in methacrylonitrile.On exposure to sunlight,in air,the methacrylonitrile-modified fiber showed the highest tolerability,as related to the loss in tenacity and degree of yellowing of all bleached,acrylonitrile-and methacrylonitrile-modified jute fibers,similar results being attained for the temperature effect on tenacity.Hence,modification of the jute fiber improved some of its textile characteristics.
