'Missing the Target' in Urothelial Cancer

Dr. Verdoorn and colleagues have provided a con-cise summary of the efforts thus far to investigateseveral classes of targeted agents in patients with ad-vanced urothelial cancers. The urothelial cancer litera-ture is awash with frequent references to the presence ofbountiful numbers of therapeutic molecular targets andthe relative ease of obtaining tissue (bladder sampling)to do translational science. Despite these theoreticaladvantages, to date the clinical results from trials oftargeted agents, drugs that have established therapeuticvalue in a number of other solid tumors, could be chari-tably characterized as extremely disappointing.
