US oil refiners Holly and Valero plan touse grease, animal fat and used cooking oilto produce biodiesel at separate joint ventureplants they are building on the US GulfCoast. The plants are intended to help thecompanies meet their obligation under USlaw to incorporate a certain volume of re-newable fuels in their product mix.Holly announced this week that it haspartnered with Endicott Biofuels to build a30 million gallon per year biodiesel plant inPort Arthur, Texas, while Valero is buildinga 137 million gallon/year “renewable diesel”plant at its St. Charles, Louisiana, refinerywith food waste recycler Darling Internation-al. The Valero-Darling project is backed bya $241 million US loan guarantee.
