US exploration firm Whiting Petroleum has drilled a promising discovery well at its Lewis and Clark prospect in the North Dakota Bakken Shale oil play. The Federal 32-4BKCE well, which targeted the Three Forks-Sanish formation, produced at an initial 24-hour rate of 1,970 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 10,530 feet and was fracture stimulated in 15 stages.
