The petroleum industry in India stands out as a live example of the strides made by the country in its march towards economic self-reliance. From a meager 0.5 million tonnes of oil produced from one of the oldest oilfields in the world-Digboi in Assam-Indian petroleum industry has come a long way with sheer hard work, dedication and commitment of our oil companies. India is a rising, developing economy and accounts for 15% of the world's population. It is the third largest consumer of oil in Asia also figures among the top energy consumers in the world, necessitating substantial import of crude oil. Efforts are being made to strengthen energy security by optimum utilisation and harnessing of domestic oil and gas resources. With rising domestic and global energy demand, the oil and gas industry has a wide range of challenges and opportunities across the upstream, midstream, downstream and oilfield services sectors.
