Iraq aims to produce a new generation of oil technocrats to oversee its ambitious output plans by setting up a petroleum university in the southern oil hub of Basrah. Isolated for 30 years by wars and sanctions, Iraq has missed out on the cutting-edge technology and skills that are required to hoist output from 2.5 million barrels per day to its minimum 7 million b/d target. The huge boost will come from the country's giant southern oil fields, so Basrah is a fitting place to educate and train young Iraqis.
