Recent earnings reports indicate that the downstream petroleum industry caught a much needed break in the second quarter of this year after getting pummeled by economic recession in 2008 and 2009. Many US independent refin- ers posted their first quarterly profit in more than a year, while integrated firms also pointed to a margin bounce that boosted their bottom lines (OD Jul.30,p7).
