De Margerie Takes Total Reins

Christophe de Margerie was named chairman of French oil giant Total on Friday in place of Thierry Desmarest, adding to his existing role as chief executive officer. Desmarest, who ceded the role of CEO to de Margerie in February 2007, had said last year he did not want to continue as chairman of Total beyond his 65th birthday in order to let new blood enter the executive team. He becomes honorary chairman of the company.
