After just nine months in office, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama announced his resignation Wednesday at an emergency meeting with lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). The resignation of the increasingly unpopular premier followed calls for him to quit from members of the center-left DPJ. Members of the upper house of parliament were particularly concerned that Hatoyama's growing unpopularity would hurt them in the upper house elections on Jul. 11.
