Swedish Telecom Executive to Succeed Sutherland as Chairman of BP

After what it termed a "worldwide and exhaustive" selection process, BP has finally picked a new chairman, announcing Thursday that Ericsson Chief Executive Carl-Henric Svanberg will take over when Peter Sutherland retires at the end of the year. Svanberg, a Swede with no previous energy industry experience, will become a nonexecutive chairman, working two or three days a week and based primarily in London. He is to take over on Jan. 1, 2010, though will join the board as a non-executive director from Sep. 1, BP said.
