Petrobras's numerical simulations by finite-element modeling yielded a preliminary two-stage drilling strategy through thick salt sections in the Santos basin off Brazil.The presence of evaporite sections in prospects for oil or gas exploration increases the probabilities of success due to conditions that favor the generation and trapping of hydrocarbons.But many operational problems,such as stuck pipe and casing collapse,have been reported by the industry when drilling through salt layers.
