Last fall, approximately 700 drilling rigs were operating in the Gulf Coast region, representing about 40% of the onshore U.S. total. These rigs were owned by 86 drilling contractors, but six companies dominated, according to Matt Woodson, an analyst with energy-research and consulting firm Wood Mackenzie. WoodMac defines the Gulf Coast region as including the Fort Worth Basin (Barnett shale), ArkLaTex region (site of the Woodford and Fayetteville shales), and the Mississippi Salt Dome, Black Warrior and Gulf Coast basins. Each area hosts expanding drilling campaigns that involve hundreds of wells, many of them targeting tight gas and shale, Woodson reports.
