In 2003, the Canadian natural gas industry was abuzz about the possibilities of coalbed methane (CBM), following the start of the country's first commercial CBM development the previous year. Bill Gunter, a distinguished senior scientist at the Alberta Research Council, was even so bold as to declare that CBM was "going to be a significant portion of Alberta's gas within the next 20 years."
