Two major investments in the Permian and Eagle Ford resource plays in Texas in 2014 put Encana on the top of the Oilweek/ CanOils ranking of international producers this year. Encana spent $5.93 billion buying Permian Basin producer Athlon Energy's 137,000 net acres in west Texas. It followed that up by spending $2.9 billion to acquire around 45,500 acres in the Eagle Ford shale play. The company, which has been focused on oil and liquids development to rebalance its portfolio in light of persistent low gas prices, built on those plays in 2015.
