As a younger engineer in the late 1990s, Neil Roszell worked for Remington Energy and watched the company dig itself into debt, roll belly-up in the downturn and sell for a fraction of its peak trading price. It's a story that repeats itself time and again, as some producers give in to the temptation of using debt to go faster in the good times or try to drill their way out of problems.
