With the arrival of horizontal multi-frac technology in North America, Calgary-based producers can be forgiven for mostly losing interest in international opportunities. It seems most people in the oilpatch feel they don't need to go overseas to find more oil and gas, says analyst Randy Ollenberger of BMO Capital Markets. "The question is what's the competitive advantage for a Calgary-based company operating in a foreign jurisdiction?" he asks rhetorically. "It doesn't make a lot of sense. Companies have done it in the past: Talisman, Nexen, Ranger Oil. There's been many over the years, and the results have been very, very mixed."
