At around 1:15 am Saturday, 25 August 2012, the Amuay Refinery, in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Venezuela), erupted in flames, when vapors are believed to have ignited and set fire to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tanks in the refinery's Block 23 area. Stella Lugo, Governor of Falcon state, where Amuay is located, said the blast was like an "earthquake," and that the resulting Shockwave damaged more than 200 homes and about a dozen businesses surrounding the refinery. A National Guard post adjacent to the refinery was completely destroyed. As of Monday, 27 August 2012, the death toll from the explosion had reached an estimated 48 people, many of them National Guard soldiers and their families. Dozens more of the nearby residents were injured and/or hospitalized. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning, and the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) offered a Mass for the victims of the blast on Sunday, 26 August 2012. It is unclear what volume of petroleum products may have spilled as a result of the incident, but there were reports of "puddles of petroleum mixed with water" coating road surfaces in the area.
