Indictments in MV Pacific Adventurer Spill

Captain Bernardino Gonzales Santos, Captain of the MV Pacific Adventurer cargo ship that spilled fuel oil along Australia's eastern seaboard in March 2009 (see OSIR, 19 March 2009), will stand trial in Brisbane, Australia District Court next year, according to an indictment presented in court this month. The vessel spilled about 71,000 gallons (1,700 barrels) of fuel oil into the sea off Queensland, Australia's coast when the ship's fuel tank was holed in two places by containers that were thrown from the ship's deck during rough seas brought on by a cyclone (see OSIR, 19 March 2009 and 26 March 2009).
