Effects of short day, long day, and short day with a night break on the morphogenesis and growth of potato (Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigena) were compared in vivo and in vitro. Irrespective of the mode of cultivation, only short day-grown plants formed tubers. Flowering was observed in the plants grown under long day and short day with a night break, but only in soil-grown plants. The photoperiodic treatment affected the growth and fresh weight ratio of aboveground:belowground organs. The growthdifferences in the plants exposed to various photoperiodic treatments were most obvious in vivo. The similarity of photoperiodic control of tuber formation in vivo and in vitro indicated that test tube plants provided a suitable model system to study photoperiodic regulatory mechanisms.
