Reactive sintering process of Fe-Al and Fe-Al-Sisystems was controlled by dilatometry. Green compacts weremade using elemental powders mixtures. The influence ofheating rate, pressing pressure and silicon addition ondimensional changes occuring during sintering was established.Some mechanisms taking place during that process wererecognized and discussed. Since the liquid phase appears ininvestigated systems just before the selfpropagating hightemperature synthesis (SHS) reaction starts and even below theisothermal sintering temperature is reached; swelling is the maindillatometric effect of the sintering. Higher heating rate reducesthe scale of the swelling.
