This study was conducted to determine the effect of Escherichia coli S 5/98 (EcS 5/98) and E. coli B 214/99 (EcB 214/99) microcins on the intestinal bacterial growth of 18 mice. Results showed that the microcins had a pronounced regulatory influence on the mice intestinal microflora. The number of Escherichia increased and the Salmonella population decreased after administration. EcS 5/98 produced type B microsins which persisted in the mouse intestine for <1 day and subsequently promoted the establishment of a monopoly in the population of antagonists of Escherichia of phenotype V which were sensitive to microcins of types C and B and exhibited antagonism toward the producer of microcin C 51..
