During 1992-2004, the chemical composition of fruits of 60 VNIISPK-bred red currant cultivars differing in genetic origin were studied in the laboratory. The soluble solids (SS) in fruits of different cultivars varied from 9.6 to 15.7%, with an average of 11.7%. SS had a close correlation with sugars in fruits. The average content of titratable acids was 2.34%. A number of cultivars and elites and selection forms with a sugar-acid ratio higher than 4.0 were noted: Bayana, Roza, ELS 43-2-140, 47-3-94, 105-11-27 and selection forms 82-4-96, 143-23-21, 168-18-73. The controls had lower sugar-acid ratio than the average value. The content of ascorbic acid in 18 cultivars bred at VNIISPK was higher than 60 mg/100 g. A combination of stability (V<10%) of ascorbic acid content in fruits and its high value was observed in Marmeladnitsa, Niva, Ustina and selection forms 54-3-62 and 79-1-89. High indices of P-active substances (anthocyanins, catechins and leucoanthocyanins) were noted in cultivars Asya and Osipovskaya, elites 44-50-30, 143-23-41 and 164-16-1, and selection form 154-22-36. A high content of pectin substances (>10%) was found in cultivars Valentinovka, Orlovskaya Zvezda, Orlovchanka, Podarok Leta and Roza, 10 elites and 5 selection forms..
