NORILSK NICKEL UPS NICKEL OUTPUT 8.6 percent IN 2008

MMC Norilsk Nickel raised nickel output 8.6 percent in 2008 to 299,700 tonnes, the world's biggest producer of the metal said on January 30. Copper production rose almost 1 percent to 419,212 tonnes. The company also said it produced 2.821 million ounces of palladium and 659,000 oz of platinum. Palladium was down 9.4 percent from 3.113 million oz in 2007, and platinum fell 10.94 percent from 740,000 oz. In the fourth quarter of 2008, Norilsk Nickel produced 81,247 tonnes nickel, 102,573 tonnes copper, 697,000 oz palladium and 164,000 oz platinum.
