The Russian ruble held firm throughout the first half of 2008, but that changed abruptly in autumn, when the fiscal authorities allowed the ruble to gradually devalue. The dollar and euro finished the year with substantial gains against the ruble. Another notable development in 2008 was the euro's rising share of turnover on the currency exchange (from 2 percent at the beginning of the year to over 10 percent at the end).
