TAJIKISTAN COULD SLASH ALUMINUM OUTPUT 15 percent-20 percent IN 2009

Talco, Tajikistan's only aluminum smelter and Central Asia's biggest, plans to cut primary aluminum production 15 percent-20 percent in 2009, Gulom Bobozoda, the Tajik trade and economic development minister, told a press conference on January 30. Bobo2oda said Talco reduced output 5.3 percent in 2008 to 399,200 tonnes of aluminum. Output fell mainly because of the energy crisis that had affected the country since the start of 2008, but also the drop in world prices for the metal, Bobozoda said. "Electricity supply to Talco was cut 20 percent-30 percent in the winter-spring period and in November-December," he said.
