The effects of low (30:30:30 kg/ha), moderate (60:60:60 kg/ha) and high (90:90:90 kg/ha) NPK rates on the yield of spring wheat cultivars (Minskaya, Moskovskaya 35, Ivolga, Enita, Amir and Lada) were studied at the Smolensk Agricultural Institute and Smolensk Pedagogical University during 1980-2002. The moderate level of NPK fertilizer significantly increased the yield of spring wheat. The yield increase, however, was accompanied by an increase in yield fluctuations due to the variation in weather conditions (especially the changes in total precipitation), which increased especially from 1990 to 2002. Increases in yield for a 1.0-kg increase in the NPK rate were highest in Enita, Lada and Amir supplied with low and moderate NPK rates, and in Amir and lada supplied with the high NPK rate..
