At the Margaret McMillan Nursery School we felt that the Millennium warranted a special project on a grand scale. The school caters for 200 children aged from six months to five years with a range of needs and abilities. In the spring term of 1999 we started to muse about a scheme that would involve them all. We also wanted a project that would embrace every aspect of the curriculum. A series of sculptural panels in wood, textiles and ceramics was considered, an ambitious idea considering we had little or no experience of working in any of these media to a standard above that of everyday nursery activities. The next task was to find a willing 'expert' to guide us in our venture. As far as the wood was concerned every avenue led to a project well beyond our financial means. We approached a friend who was an experienced secondary school art teacher with a specialism in textiles, but despite all our efforts, working with such young children filled her with dread. However, she did know a potter, also an experienced secondary school teacher, who might be willing to help. We invited Marilyn Andreetti to visit the nursery and it took only a little effort to persuade her to 'try her hand' with the children.
