Incontinence Outcomes in Women Undergoing Primary and Repeat Midurethral Sling Procedures

We read the recently published study by Par den et al. Because of the study design (mailed questionnaires), the authors could not perform an objective assessment of urinary leakage (negative cough test with a full bladder). The authors denned "cure" on the basis of the answer to two questions of the Urinary Distress Inventory-6; this can be considered a subjective assessment of cure. However, most of the recent studies considered subjective success as an answer of "very much improved or much improved" on the Patient Global Impression of Improvement Questionnaire, which was completed by study patients. It should be pointed out that the improvement in the Patient Global Impression of Improvement scores after surgery was similar between the two study groups. Furthermore, a specific assessment of stress urinary incontinence symptoms was performed using the Medical Epidemiologic and Social Aspects of Aging questionnaire stress subset scores, and, after treatment, no difference in its results was observed between the study groups.
