Psoas abscess in obstetrics: Uncommon condition with common presentations

Apsoas (or iliopsoas) abscess is a collection of pus in the iliopsoas muscle compartment, but occasionally, because of anatomic relationships, infection extends to the buttock, hip, or upper thigh. Psoas muscle abscess can be either primary (through direct inoculation or hematoge-nous spread subsequent to trauma) or secondary (dissemination from adjacent structures). It is a relatively rare but a well-described condition that generally presents with fever and pain in the lumbar region extending down the thigh.1 Pyogenic abscess of the psoas muscle was first described by Herman Mynter~2 in 1881. Historically the majority of primary psoas abscesses were a manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Today, more than 80% of cases of primary psoas abscess are caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
