SHALE PITCH - A NEW FORM OF BINDER FOR PRODUCING ALUMINUM ELECTROLYZER ANODE PASTE

At the present time the requirements of the aluminum producing industry for coal-tar electrode pitch cannot be fully satisfied by pitch production in the coke/chemical industries of the CIS countries. The volume of pitch production in Ukraine, in Kazakhstan, and in Russia has decreased sharply because of the reduction of the deliveries of the coal-tar resins from the metallurgical and coke-chemical plants because of the reduction of the demand for metallurgical coke and the wearing out of the equipment. In connection with the growing shortage of the coal-tar pitch, and also considering the high carcinogenic level of the products of the thermal decomposition of the pitch in the anode paste of the self-baking anodes, we need to find new forms of product that can compete successfully with the traditional binding pitch.
