SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL ACTIVITY OF JSC VAMI RELATING TO FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AND MODERNIZING OF LIGHT-METALS PRODUCTION DURING THE TRANSITION TO A MARKET ECONOMY

AO VAMI [joint stock company - Russian Aluminum/Magnesium Institute] was organized in January of 1993 on the basis of VAMI [All-Russian Aluminum/Magnesium Institute], which was founded in Leningrad on 1 September 1931. During the many years of its existence, VAMI has made large contributions to the creation, the establishment, and the subsequent expansion of the aluminum, titanium/magnesium, and electrode-producing industries of Russia, several countries of the CIS, and the far broad. The scientific/engineering developments and plans of VAMI have been used in the construction of 50 enterprises, including 21 aluminum plants of overall capacity more than four million tonnes of aluminum a year, 14 alumina plants with overall annual output more than 6.5 million tonnes of alumina, 8 magnesium and titanium/magnesium plants, and 7 enterprises for the production of electrodes and graphitized products. In 1981 was awarded the Order of the October Revolution for its extensive services in developing the nonferrous metallurgy industry and in creating new techniques and progressive technologies and introducing them in the production of the light metals.
