Results are presented from industrial studies of the process of scouring and removal of the bottom crust from reverberatory furnaces at the Central Ural Copper Smeltery that use a vertical immersion tuyere. It is shown that if natural gas is burned at a rate of 50-70 m~3/h with an air consumption coefficient of 0.9-1.0, crust thickness decreases by 15 cm in the course of four days without any substantial increase in the copper content in the dump slag.
