During my first year of college I came across a group of pots titled Woodfiring Is Not As Easy As It Seems. The work was made by Joss Hibbs who now runs Powdermills pottery and gallery in Dartmoor and still woodfires. I agree. It's tricky Constant struggle seems to be inescapable and I usually feel grumpy for a period during each firing. Yet it remains the most satisfying process. I am utterly mesmerised, feeding wood into the quiet box of beautiful raging heat and flames. The fact that five of us were still wood-firing at the end of our degree must testify something to the alluring (obsessive?) nature of this process. The fact that we were still friends at the end says something too.
