Reaching a CCl_4 solution of dithizone with palladium, platinum, gold, and copper ions coordinated to the surface of sulfur- and nitrogen-bearing chemically modified silicas yields brightly colored mixed-ligand complexes. Diffuse reflection electron spectroscopy was used to study the structure of these complexes in comparison to the structure of the dithizonato complexes of these metals in organic solvents. The utility of mixed-ligand complexes for a rapid visual detection of palladium and platinum microamounts was shown.
