25-Year-old Slab of Clay: A Marriage of Ceramics and Printmaking

As the mid-morning light streams in through the wall of windows behind him, clay monoprint artist Mitch Lyons leans forward to trail a swirl of colored slip onto a leather-hard clay slab. He pauses to glance over his work surface, which is strewn with a dozen rudimentary tools. He selects a small hand-cut stencil and lays it on the slab. Next, he grabs a chunk of pastel, made by pouring colored slip onto plain newsprint and leaving it to dry overnight.
