The figure continues to otter an infinite number of 'readings', whether as expressive of individual character or as a metaphor for the 'human condition'. Glenys Barton has been making figurative sculptures in clay since first working with the material, exploring aspects of both portraiture and abstraction. These have included the super-refined qualities of bone china as well as the more robust but intricate surfaces of smoked earthenware. Her figures fall into portraits, memorably of Jean Muir, either modelled in low relief or three-dimensions, and the figure as symbol or metaphor for humanity as a whole. Children of Silence and Slow Time falls into the latter category.
