It's a mid-summer's evening in downtown Hobart, Tasmania, and we're at Sidecar, the bar linked to Garagistes, a no-bookings-taken concept restaurant a block away. POTS AT SIDECAR Four of us are scrutinising a single empty bowl made by Ben Richardson of Ridgeline Pottery. We're handling, weighing, caressing, and passing it between us. I am gauging the response of 'non-potters' to this range of local wheel-thrown ceramics, curious to hear reactions beyond my own. 'You asked me what I meant by the term "honest", one responds, '... it's not the only word I would use to describe them. They're fit for purpose, really attractive, not over fussy or over flamboyant - good, earthy, solid - they're going to do the job, look good, forever.
