Appledore, famous for its shipbuilding and fishing traditions, is a maritime village situated at the confluence of the Taw and the Torridge rivers in North Devon. The Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore single track railway was extended to Appledore in 1908, but with the arrival of the Great War this unique railway proved to be short-lived. The government requisitioned the locomotives, rails and equipment for military use, and it closed in 1917. The Appledore Residents Association commissioned local ceramic artist, Maggie Curtis, to design and construct a plaque, which would commemorate the railway and adorn the station wall - all that remains of the railway. If needed to reflect the period and relate to the traditional architectural ceramics of the area. North Devon has a great ceramic history, largely due to the rich clay deposits of plastic terracotta, Fremington clay and Peters Marland Ball clay (which Maggie used to mix every morning when working for Michael Leach).
