A Potter's Tale in Africa: The life and work of Andrew Walford

I met Andrew WALVORD when we were giving a joint workshop at the Technikon in Johannesburg, some years ago. He is a mail of definite opinions, steeped in the Anglo-Oriental mystique and, as such, a thoroughly trained craftsman. We had much to talk about although there were some differences of opinion, I remember at the time. I still use the turning tool he gave me at the end of the two days (it was a peace offering perhaps) and I see pictures of him using a similar one in this book. So I was interested to visit the Walford home and studio when, later on that same trip, I arrived in Shongweni in KwaZuluNatal. This was a trip organised by the Technikon for a group of potters through the tribal lands, seeing amazing wildlife and, more importantly, meeting the potters working in the African tradition, making large jars of lively proportions and exquisite decoration. I remember it all clearly and the Walford establishment was a joy to see: cobbled courtyards, fragrant flowers, views over nature reserves, a well set out workshop, a gallery of good pots and a productive atmosphere.
