Thirty Years of Development of Chinese Contemporary Ceramic Art I. The Rising Stage

The reform and opening-up of chfna in 1978 witnessed a series of social and cultural changes alongside economic and ideological transfor- mations. Contrary to the accelerated economic developments witnessed in the past three decades, significant artistic changes have evolved more slowly. In the 1980s when China was first open to the outside world, contemporary Chinese art was still in its early stages of evolving. A case in point is that ceramic artists were making work largely devoted to traditional vessels and primarily based on utilitarian ceramics meeting the demands of people's daily life.
