'Don't make patterns out of patterns.'' (Tomimoto Kenkichi, 1886-1963)I often refer to this quote, and it is written in the front of one of my sketchbooks. It really helps when you have a numb bum from sitting on a cold stone in the rain drawing a clump of grass for over an hour. Tomimoto created patterns from sketches of everyday scenes -trees and flowers that no one else would notice. He refused to use existing patterns. He extracted the natural grace of these ordinary plants, and used them to create new, fresh, and original designs.
