In May 1936, David 'Chim' Seymour, one of the world's great humanist photographers, took one of the most recognised and important images of the Spanish Civil War. Showing a woman nursing her baby while listening to speakers at a land reform meeting in Estremadura, only months before the Barcelona uprising, it is a thoughtful and epathetic representation, symbolising both the motivations and fears of those involved. Although perhaps simple in composition and purpose, the photograph's complexities and effect go far beyond what might be perceived at first glance.
